Why is Your Blood Glucose HIGH in the MORNING before breakfast?

Somogyi Effect or Low glucose level while sleeping

Body release glucose from the liver (gluconeogenesis) – cause high blood sugar.

Symptoms: nausea + headache in the morning

To confirm: check blood sugar at early morning hours

Cause: inappropriate evening insulin dosage



Dawn Phenomenon

Near dawn, the level of the specific hormone naturally increase – cause the blood sugar to increase; usually, 5-6 am.

Dawn effect occurs when hormones such as cortisol, glucagon and epinephrine are released by the body, causing the liver to release glucose.

Therefore, explains abnormally high blood glucose early morning. 

Usually, abnormally high blood glucose levels occur between 8 and 10 hours after going to sleep for people with diabetes
